Re:DRUMS Vol.2 REsequence 4
“Rearranged by the breathing of the Rhythmgrapher Yang Tae-Seok, sounds of four Korean traditional percussions “Samul” transcend traditional time and space through the present’s, vibrating toward the future.”
The current project of Yang Tae-Seok’s is this unique album where he expressed with 4 different instruments of Samulnori in his own particular way of understanding them.
Samulnori patterns, which are now too popular to be considered fresh, were also an innovative result of new trials and experiments by young Korean traditional musicians back in 1978.
In this project, the organic Ensemble of 4 Samulnori performers is dissolved and then reinterpreted.
Yang did not simply reinterpret those acoustic percussions but also contained in the album the remixed, electronic version of his works.
This is where I’d say he is being considerate to those who are new to Korean traditional music, and also being clever to do so.
If I were to say those Korean traditional intrinsic rhythms were 40 years ago 4 shining dots of Samulnori, I imagine the current album of his as the moment they are turning into one shining point of rhythms.
I applaud the album of experiments and attempts by this artist Yang Tae-Seok, looking forward to the next step of his journey.
